DEARB.B.—Iamoppressedwithbusinessallday,andCompanyallnight.ButIwillsnatchaquarterofanhour.YourrecentacquisitionsofthePictureandtheLetteraregreatlytobecongratulated.Itoohaveapictureofmyfatherandthecopyofhisfirstloveverses;buttheyhavebeenminelong.Blakeisarealname,Iassureyou,andamostextraordinaryman,ifhebestillliving.HeistheRobert[William]Blake,whosewilddesignsacpanyasplendidfolioeditionofthe"NightThoughts,"whichyoumayhaveseen,inoneofwhichhepicturesthepartingofsoulandbodybyasolidmassofhumanformfloatingoff,Godknowshow,fromalumpishmass(facSimiletoitself)leftbehindonthedyingbed.Hepaintsinwatercoloursmarvellousstrangepictures,visionsofhisbrain,whichheassertsthathehasseen.Theyhavegreatmerit.HehasseentheoldWelshbardsonSnowdon—hehasseentheBeautifullest,thestrongest,andtheUgliestMan,leftalonefromtheMassacreoftheBritonsbytheRomans,andhaspaintedthemfrommemory(Ihaveseenhispaintings),andassertsthemtobeasgoodasthefiguresofRaphaelandAngelo,butnotbetter,astheyhadpreciselythesameretro-visionsandpropheticvisionswiththemself[himself].Thepaintersinoil(whichhewillhaveitthatneitherofthempractised)heaffirmstohavebeentheruinofart,andaffirmsthatallthewhilehewasengagedinhisWaterpaintings,Titianwasdisturbinghim,TitiantheIIIGeniusofOilPainting.HisPictures—oneinparticular,theCanterburyPilgrims(faraboveStothards)—havegreatmerit,buthard,dry,yetwithgrace.HehaswrittenaCatalogueofthemwithamostspiritedcriticismonChaucer,butmysticalandfullofVision.HispoemshavebeensoldhithertoonlyinManuscript.Ineverreadthem;butafriendatmydesireprocuredthe"SweepSong."Thereisonetoatiger,whichIhaveheardrecited,beginning—
"Tiger,Tiger,burningbright,
Throthedesartsofthenight,"
whichisglorious,but,alas!Ihavenotthebook;forthemanisflown,whitherIknownot—toHadesoraMadHouse.ButImustlookonhimasoneofthemostextraordinarypersonsoftheage.MontgomerysbookIhavenotmuchhopefroTheSociety,withtheaffectedname,hasbeenlabouringatitforthese20years,andmadefewconverts.Ithinkitwasinjudicioustomixstoriesavowedlycolourdbyfictionwiththesadtruestatementsfromtheparliamentaryrecords,etc.,butIwishthelittleNegroesallthegoodthatcanefromit.Ibatterdmybrains(notbutterdthem—butitisabada)forafewversesforthem,butIcouldmakenothingofit.Youhavebeenluckier.ButBlakesarethefloweroftheset,youwill,Iamsure,agree,thosomeofMontgomerysattheendarepretty;buttheDreamawkwardlyparaphrasdfromB.
WiththeexceptionofanEpilogueforaPrivateTheatrical,Ihavewrittennothingnowfornear6months.Itisinvaintospurmeon.Imustwait.Icannotwritewithoutagenialimpulse,andIhavenone.Tisbarrenallanddearth.Nomatter;lifeissomethingwithoutscribbling.Ihavegotridofmybadspirits,andholdupprettywellthisrain-damndMay.
SowehavelostanotherPoet.InevermuchrelishedhisLordshipsmind,andshallbesorryiftheGreekshavecausetomisshiHewastomeoffensive,andInevercanmakeouthisgreatpower,whichhisadmirerstalkof.Why,alineofWordsworthsisalevertolifttheimmortalspirit!ByroncanonlymovetheSpleen.HewasatbestaSatyrist,—inanyotherwayhewasmeanenough.IdaresayIdohiminjustice;butIcannotlovehim,norsqueezeateartohismemory.Hedidnotliketheworld,andhehasleftit,asAldermanCurtisadvisedtheRadicals,"Iftheydontliketheircountry,damnem,letemleaveit,"theypossessingnoroodofgroundinEngland,andhe10,000acres.ByronwasbetterthanmanyCurtises.

WilliamBlakewasatthistimesixty-sixyearsofage.Hewaslivinginpovertyandneglectat3FountainCourt,Strand.Blakemade537illustrationstoYoungsNightThoughts,ofwhichonlyforty-sevenwerepublished.Lambis,however,thinkingofhiseditionofBlairsGrave.Theexhibitionofhisworkswasheldin1809,anditwasforthisthatBlakewrotethedescriptivecatalogue.LambhadsentBlakes"SweepSong,"which,like"Tiger,Tiger,"isintheSongsofInnocence,toJamesMontgomeryforhisChimney-SweepersFriendandClimbingBoysAlbum,1824,alittlebookdesignedtoamelioratethelotofthosechildren,inwhoseinterestasocietyexisted.Bartonalsocontributedsomething.ItwasBlakespoemwhichhadexcitedBartonscuriosity.ProbablyhethoughtthatLambwroteit.LambsmistakeconcerningBlakesnameiscuriousinsofarasthatitwasBlakesbrotherRobert,whodiedin1787,whoinavisionrevealedtothepoetthemethodbywhichtheSongsofInnocenceweretobereproduced.
