DEARB.B.—Iamoppressedwithbusinessallday，andCompanyallnight.ButIwillsnatchaquarterofanhour.YourrecentacquisitionsofthePictureandtheLetteraregreatlytobecongratulated.Itoohaveapictureofmyfatherandthecopyofhisfirstloveverses;buttheyhavebeenminelong.Blakeisarealname，Iassureyou，andamostextraordinaryman，ifhebestillliving.HeistheRobert[William]Blake，whosewilddesignsacpanyasplendidfolioeditionofthe"NightThoughts，"whichyoumayhaveseen，inoneofwhichhepicturesthepartingofsoulandbodybyasolidmassofhumanformfloatingoff，Godknowshow，fromalumpishmass（facSimiletoitself）leftbehindonthedyingbed.Hepaintsinwatercoloursmarvellousstrangepictures，visionsofhisbrain，whichheassertsthathehasseen.Theyhavegreatmerit.HehasseentheoldWelshbardsonSnowdon—hehasseentheBeautifullest，thestrongest，andtheUgliestMan，leftalonefromtheMassacreoftheBritonsbytheRomans，andhaspaintedthemfrommemory（Ihaveseenhispaintings），andassertsthemtobeasgoodasthefiguresofRaphaelandAngelo，butnotbetter，astheyhadpreciselythesameretro-visionsandpropheticvisionswiththemself[himself].Thepaintersinoil（whichhewillhaveitthatneitherofthempractised）heaffirmstohavebeentheruinofart，andaffirmsthatallthewhilehewasengagedinhisWaterpaintings，Titianwasdisturbinghim，TitiantheIIIGeniusofOilPainting.HisPictures—oneinparticular，theCanterburyPilgrims（faraboveStothards）—havegreatmerit，buthard，dry，yetwithgrace.HehaswrittenaCatalogueofthemwithamostspiritedcriticismonChaucer，butmysticalandfullofVision.HispoemshavebeensoldhithertoonlyinManuscript.Ineverreadthem;butafriendatmydesireprocuredthe"SweepSong."Thereisonetoatiger，whichIhaveheardrecited，beginning—

"Tiger，Tiger，burningbright，

Throthedesartsofthenight，"

whichisglorious，but，alas!Ihavenotthebook;forthemanisflown，whitherIknownot—toHadesoraMadHouse.ButImustlookonhimasoneofthemostextraordinarypersonsoftheage.MontgomerysbookIhavenotmuchhopefroTheSociety，withtheaffectedname，hasbeenlabouringatitforthese20years，andmadefewconverts.Ithinkitwasinjudicioustomixstoriesavowedlycolourdbyfictionwiththesadtruestatementsfromtheparliamentaryrecords，etc.，butIwishthelittleNegroesallthegoodthatcanefromit.Ibatterdmybrains（notbutterdthem—butitisabada）forafewversesforthem，butIcouldmakenothingofit.Youhavebeenluckier.ButBlakesarethefloweroftheset，youwill，Iamsure，agree，thosomeofMontgomerysattheendarepretty;buttheDreamawkwardlyparaphrasdfromB.

WilliamBlakewasatthistimesixty-sixyearsofage.Hewaslivinginpovertyandneglectat3FountainCourt，Strand.Blakemade537illustrationstoYoungsNightThoughts，ofwhichonlyforty-sevenwerepublished.Lambis，however，thinkingofhiseditionofBlairsGrave.Theexhibitionofhisworkswasheldin1809，anditwasforthisthatBlakewrotethedescriptivecatalogue.LambhadsentBlakes"SweepSong，"which，like"Tiger，Tiger，"isintheSongsofInnocence，toJamesMontgomeryforhisChimney-SweepersFriendandClimbingBoysAlbum，1824，alittlebookdesignedtoamelioratethelotofthosechildren，inwhoseinterestasocietyexisted.Bartonalsocontributedsomething.ItwasBlakespoemwhichhadexcitedBartonscuriosity.ProbablyhethoughtthatLambwroteit.LambsmistakeconcerningBlakesnameiscuriousinsofarasthatitwasBlakesbrotherRobert，whodiedin1787，whoinavisionrevealedtothepoetthemethodbywhichtheSongsofInnocenceweretobereproduced.
