[Owinglargelytoaflawinthetitle-deedofhishouseat41SkinnerStreet，whichhehadtoforfeit，Godwinhadeuponpovertygreaterthananyhehadpreviouslysuffered，althoughhehadbeenalwaysmoreorlessnecessitous.Lambnowlenthim￡50.Inthefollowingyear，afterbeingmainlyinstrumentalinputtingonfootafundforGodwinsbenefit，hetransformedthisloanintoagift.Anappealwasissuedin1823askingfor;￡600，thefollowingpostscripttowhich，inLambshand，ispreservedattheSouthKensingtonMuseum:—

"Therearefewcircumstancesbelongingtothecasewhicharenotsufficientlyadvertedtointheaboveletter.

"Mr.Godwinsopponentdeclareshimselfdeterminedtoactagainsthimwiththelastdegreeofhostility:thelawgiveshimthepowerthefirstweekinNovembertoseizeuponMr.Godwinsproperty，furniture，books，&c.togetherwithallhispresentsourcesofineforthesupportofhimselfandhisfamily.Mr.Godwinhasatthistimemadeconsiderableprogressinaworkofgreatresearch，andrequiringallthepowersofhismind，tothepletionofwhichhehadlookdforfuturepecuniaryadvantage.Hismindisatthismomentsoentirelyoccupiedinthiswork，thathefeelswithinhimselfthefirmnessandresolutionthatnoprospectofevilorcalamityshalldrawhimofffromitorsuspendhislabours.Butthecalamityitself，ifpermittedtoarrive，willproducethephysicalimpossibilityforhimtoproceed.Hisbooksandthematerialsofhiswork，aswellashispresentsourcesofine，willbetakenfromhiThosematerialshavebeenthecollectionofseveralyears，anditwouldrequirealongtimetoreplacethem，iftheycouldeverbereplaced.

"Thefavourofanearlyanswerisparticularlyrequested，thattheextentofthefundssuppliedmayassoonaspossiblebeascertained，particularlyasanyaid，howeverkindlyintended，will，afterthelapseofaveryfewweeks，beeuselesstothepurposeinview."

TheworkonwhichGodwinwasthenlabouringwashisHistoryoftheCommonwealth，1824-1828.HisnewhomewasintheStrand.In1833hereceivedthepostofYeomanUsheroftheExchequer，whichheheldtillhisdeathin1836，althoughitsdutieshadvanishederethen.]
